Near to where I live is a space that’s known by many locals as the Navy Fields. And yet, to some, it’s called Shore Road Playing Fields. It’s a great wide green space, encircled by woodland, with a children’s play area, and right on the edge of Southampton Water. Although it’s reasonably well used, not everyone in the local community makes use of it. And for some reason it’s got two names.
Improved access paths have been put in, so now was a good time to persuade people to go there. I was commissioned by New Forest District Council to write and illustrate a Trail Tale, a story booklet that takes visitors on a journey around the park, complete with activities and a map. I took some initial ideas along to Waterside Primary School and the children helped shape a tale that would become the finished product.
As a hook, I used the fact that the place has two names, and tied that into the local history, from a Viking raid on Southampton through to flying boats, steam trains, and the Second World War. There’s lots about the local wildlife too.
New Forest District Council have made the booklets free to use, and they can be collected from Hythe Library, or The Grove. So, if you’re looking for something to do with the children, or are just curious yourself, pick up a copy and find out exactly why this green space has two names.
